I just couldn't get enough
I studied with Lissa Hunter at Arrowmont School of Arts and Crafts in 2005 or 2006. It was a while ago, but the significance of that one workshop still resonates today. I learned the techniques of coiling and knotless netting from Lissa, and I still employ them in my own practice and in the classes that I now teach in Fibers. I remember staying up all night to practice the skills we had learned during the day, I just couldn’t get enough.
- Ann M.

My time learning from her has changed and enhanced my practice as an artist.
I have had the good fortune to be a student in one of Lissa Hunter’s two-week classes at Haystack Mountain School of Crafts over 20 years ago. She has an ability as an instructor to be at once structured in her approach to sharing techniques and fostering personal exploration. I continue to employ many of the textile techniques that I learned from her. I can unequivocally say that my time learning from her has changed and enhanced my practice as an artist.
- Carol S.
Lissa is not only a brilliant craftsman, but a creative problem solver and storyteller.
- Berry M.
I took a workshop with Lissa years ago. She is brilliant.

Let your materials guide you, and your creativity surprise you.
There’s craft in art, and art in craft. But how do you connect the precision of craft with the creativity of art? What happens when ideas spill out faster than you can sketch them, and your materials are more rebellious than responsive? When your attempts to create feel like a tug-of-war between materials, technique, and ideas?
As an artist, your practice isn’t a straight path - it’s a conversation; between you, your materials, and the art you want to create. If you’re ready to align your creativity with your craft, Finding is your chance to grab hold of your practice - literally and figuratively! - by reimagining what you know, and exploring what your head, hands and heart can create.
Through thoughtful exploration and guided practical techniques, you’ll learn to bridge inspiration and execution and figure out the practical day-to-day framework that will help you succeed as an artist. By the end of the course, you’ll see things differently, find things differently, and do things differently in your mixed media fibre art practice.
Over eight weeks, you’ll weave new techniques, perspectives, and possibilities into your art practice.

Module 1 ~ Inspiration, Lines & Sketches
Many people understand silence as the absence of noise; here, you’ll learn that it’s not the absence of something but the presence of a special quality. Silence is about the things we can’t see… but can feel. It’s about the strongly present atmosphere if we allow the space to listen.
You’ll let go of distractions and engage with all your senses, opening up a conversation between you and your art. Learning many ways to make a mark on location and back in the studio and begin the layering process that is the foundation of Mixed Media artwork.
The beginning of this course is like an attunement. Eva shows you how she prepares herself internally, like a subtle warm-up. You’ll discover the importance of listening to your inner voice to find a place to rest within yourself. This works best if you dare to seek out the stillness within.

Lessons & Topics Covered In Module 1:
- Eva’s creative philosophies
- Importance of silence
- Engaging all senses
- Collecting in nature
- Blind sketching
- Working on location with the elements
- Blind Portraits
Module 2 ~ Colours & Pigments
The language of the soul is hidden in colour. At this point, it is important to delve deeper into the world of colours in order to be able to work with these principles throughout the course..
You’ll take a closer look at colours, how they can be applied and mixed and how it is possible to create a good connection between the colours. On the one hand, you’ll work with finished colours and still make your own palette out of them; on the other hand, you’ll learn how pigments are processed into colours and with which different bonds they can be mixed and fixed.
Uncertainty of colour choice will be removed, and you’ll move forward with confidence, knowing that your colour choices won’t drown out the subtleties of your artwork.
Lessons & Topics Covered In Module 2:
- Assembling colours
- Creating pigments from peat and rust
- Colour mixing
- Making colour paste from pigments

Module 3 ~ Collage Paper
Taking what you’ve learnt about colour palettes, it’s time to make your own collage papers. Printing paper yourself is an artistic act; it creates a more intensive connection, goes deeper and sharpens or opens the artistic sense. With this, you’ll go one step further into your own inner quality of creativity and feel how almost meditative and quiet but still extremely lively this process is.
Making simple prints of things found in nature and making your own stamps to explore patterns and rhythm will keep you busy using a gelatine printing plate – an essential tool and any mixed media artists kit.
Lessons & Topics Covered In Module 3:
- Making your own collage papers
- Using objects found in nature on the gell plate
- Creating your own stamps
- Exploring the difference between pattern and rhythm.
- Make your own gelatine printing plate recipes.

Module 4 ~ Working In Series
You will make small collage constellations, looking at simple compositional aspects and delicate layering over the collage to create depth and fusion.
It’s now where you turn to playfully engage in this process as you experience the benefits of working small in a concentrated way and the tremendous impact this has when transferring your work to a larger format. This lively and stimulating process leads to a relaxed flow that can conjure surprising results to enhance your overall art practice.
Lessons & Topics Covered In Module 4:
- Discover the importance and see examples of Eva’s sketchbooks
- Creation of a miniature series
- How working in miniature helps when working large
- Creation of a larger series
- Use pencils, collages and colour to create a finished piece.
- The beauty of repetition

Module 5 ~ Structured Surfaces
You’ll learn steps to create a lively materiality in your picture, which is very similar to the transient processes of nature. Before you begin to work concretely on constructing an image, it is good to understand these different techniques and processes to have worked through their creation. These steps are memorized inside and begin to speak when an image emerges.

You’ll begin to work communicatively with the image, and it will pose questions you can now answer with one technique or another.
Lessons & Topics Covered In Module 5:
- Discover structure & marble pastes
- Create backgrounds using plaster and clay
- Explore how pigments and paints respond to surfaces
- Experiment with oil and ink
Module 6 ~ Contrasts
The layering of very different elements and paying attention to compression and openness are important aspects. This process has much room for experimentation, supported by the large format. After diving into this exciting process, you will search and find surprising pictures…
Lessons & Topics Covered In Module 6:
- Lines & planes
- Large & small
- Light & dark
- A lot & a little
- Complementary colours & material contrasts
- Cropping and finishing

Module 7 ~ Putting It All Together

All your modules will combine here to create a series of images while focusing more intensively on the individual design. With calm and listening observation, you will build up structures step by step and apply the possibilities you have learned.
Lessons & Topics Covered In Module 7:
- Combine the media into two finished artworks
- Learn to reserve judgement
- Explore how depth and contrast can be created
- The steps to finishing a picture
BONUS - Colour Constellations
Enrich your surfaces by adding depth and layering with mixed media to transform your prints into stunning colour constellations.

Module 1 : So we begin
The language of your creativity begins with the connection between ideas, materials, and techniques. In this module, you’ll establish a foundation for capturing inspiration and working with intention to ensure your artistic process feels meaningful.
You’ll learn how to document your thoughts and discoveries through sketchbooks and notes, and build a system that keeps your ideas alive and accessible. Through Lissa’s coiling technique, you’ll experiment with materials, shapes, and textures to explored the sculptural possibilities of basketry and mixed media fibre art.
Module highlights: Capturing ideas in sketchbooks, coiling with raffia and other materials, designing vessel forms, and exploring the interplay between interior and exterior surfaces.
Module 2: Making our way
Lissa believes being an artist isn’t about finding yourself - it’s about making yourself. In this module, you’ll forge your own creative path by broadening your artistic vocabulary and introducing simple, versatile techniques, and unconventional materials into your practice.
You’ll discover how to use books as sources of inspiration and how to reimagine your materials and tools. By experimenting with looping, stitching, pinning, and wrapping, you’ll learn how these simple methods can elevate your work while staying true to your artistic vision.
Module highlights: Exploring alternative materials, looping and stitching techniques, using books for inspiration, and building a personal artistic vocabulary.
Module 3: The stuff of making
Materials are more than tools - they’re partners in your creative process. In this module, you’ll deepen your understanding of how materials function as structural elements and learn to work with their unique qualities.
Through thoughtful exploration and hands-on practice, you’ll discover how to assess materials for flexibility, strength, and suitability for various techniques. From linear elements like reed to planar elements like bark and splints, you’ll learn to recognise and harness their potential. By the end of this module, you'll gain the skills to see materials not just for what they are, but for what they can become in your hands.
Module 4: Gilding our lilies with intention
Creativity thrives on curiosity. In this module, we shift our focus from materials as structure to materials as expression, exploring how surface, texture, and embellishment can create meaning.
You’ll learn how to experiment with surface design, contrast, and material manipulation, and use texture, layering, and embellishment to add depth, detail, and meaning to your work. By asking "What if?" at every stage of your process, you'll explore new ways to develop your artistic voice.
Module 5: Ideas lead the way
You’ll learn how to recognise, commit to, and develop your ideas in ways that feel personal and meaningful. Through experimentation, reflection, and process-driven exploration, you’ll discover that your ideas have value - not because they are grand or groundbreaking, but because they are yours.
Module 6: The grammar of making
This isn’t about rigid design rules or perfect drawings. Instead, you’ll learn how to analyse composition, recognise patterns, and develop a more structured approach to your creative decisions. Sketching, maquette-making, and visual studies will become tools for thinking and testing ideas, as well as refining concepts, and strengthening your vision before committing to a final piece.
Module 7: Developing a body of work
In this module, you’ll gain insight into how artists build bodies of work over time, evolving their materials, techniques, and ideas while staying connected to a central vision.
Reimagine the familiar and create art moves from your hands into the hearts of others.
A lifetime of learning and exploration awaits.

What a great and inclusive arts space you have created.
I'm more or less putting myself through a "degree" with all your courses! This is a change in medium for me and I'm loving fibre arts immensely. What a great and inclusive arts space you have created. I'm in a remote area, in the back blocks of a very small state in Australia and to have access to quality courses, led by world class artists is a true gift! Thank you.
- Kerryn B.
Immersion in creative practice has literally held me together.
To be able to focus on what we love allows space for deep reassurance and connection to emerge during the process. When I began looking at online courses, those offered by you stood out to me, as being nurturing, filled with valuable content, beautifully presented and easily accessible.
The courses have contributed to deep inner shifts and a regaining of trust and confidence in myself and the choices I make.
